#50. Demon Hunter
Summer of Darkness

Release Date: May 4, 2004

Demon Hunter's 2002 debut album really caught my attention. A couple of my friends were into Slipknot, and that album sounded a lot like them. While I listened to that first album an awful lot, it was Summer of Darkness that really sold me on the band. The album has several classic DH songs, like "Not Ready To Die" and "My Heartstrings Come Undone," and really set them up for what they would be known for for years to come: a heavy band with the range to go from vicious growls and brutal guitars right into huge melodic hooks. I really feel that it's the album that started changing the Christian metal scene and opening it up in ways never seen before. Because of Summer of Darkness, and more pointedly Demon Hunter, Christian metal saw an enormous explosion and was accepted in ways that Christian music wasn't accepted before. While "Heartstrings" is probably their biggest hit, "Beheaded" (featuring Mike Williams of The Agony Scene) remains an absolute personal favorite. One could argue that Demon Hunter has released better albums, but this is the one that paved the way and revitalized Solid State Records. It's truly a classic album deserving of recognition in Tooth & Nail's impressive history.
