Rand Winburn is the sole artist on the California-based Corgi Boy Records. His latest album for Corgi Boy is an EP entitled I Can Be Anything, an electronic album a la Joy Electric and The Echoing Green. In fact, replace Rand Winburn with Ronnie Martin and it could almost pass as a Joy Electric album (it's only missing Martin's signature vocals). While Winburn's vocal style is nothing like Martin's, they do seem almost out of place here. The music is rather well-composed, and his voice does fit the album on occasion, but his vocals would probably be more well-suited for a different style of music. On its own, however, the music is pretty strong, and holds the album together well. I like the new wave-style of synth that Winburn uses in songs like "I'll Be Here" and "Love Brought You." One thing about "I'll Be Here" is that a little past the halfway point of the song, it spends a good amount of time acting as an instrumental. It's got a good throwback sound and it shows off Winburn's composing skills, but it goes on a little too long just repeating the same part. Another interesting aspect of I Can Be Anything is the final track "Bad Religion." It keeps the electronic vibe, but adds some electronic banjo and gives it a southern feel as well (to Winburn's credit, his voice does sound pretty good in this track due to the slightly southern sound). "Bad Religion" is a story about Adam and Eve and their temptation - the "bad religion" was the stuff that Satan told them when convincing them to eat the forbidden fruit. Overall, I Can Be Anything has its ups and downs, with some good production, but some slightly out-of-place vocals (and lyrics that don't really make too big of an attempt to grab the listener). I Can Be Anything is a good offering of electronica, but it could use some work. I'd love to hear a full-length project from Winburn, though.
