The singer/songwriter is a focal point of CCM. Many an artist can no longer simply perform well but must provide a complete package of lyricist, composer, musician and performer. Indie artist Josh Egan hopes to showcase a bit of his singer/songwriter skills with his latest single, "Scatterbrain." Musically, it carries a sound that is reminiscent of early Jason Mraz with a dash of 90's coffee house, as it features light guitar with some accents of loose piano tootles. Lyrically, it's verbose and a little muddled together as Egan sings in the chorus, "Maybe it's not, and maybe it is. Maybe my mind is clogged with heartbreak and kisses. All I know is I am going down. All I know is love is unstable ground. There you go, there's the life of a scatterbrain." While the song may be called "Scatterbrain," the lyrics feel way too disjointed to make much sense. If that is the intended goal, however, mission accomplished, but isn't really enjoyable. There seems to be a ton of backstory involved with the song. In a coffeehouse setting, I can imagine this track doing very well with some explaniation so that the audience can be invested, but this being only a single, I have to evaluate it as such. Overall, the single heavily lacks production quality and flow. Nevertheless, there is evident strength in Egan's foundation and a discernable framework that really could have been fleshed out better with a strong producer and sound engineer. This may not be the best showcasing moment of Egan's talent, but with a little more time, I can imagine his future endeavors being much stronger.
