Capital Kings were certainly not the first artist in Christian music to foray into electronic dance music (abbreviated as EDM), but they were the most successful. After remixing tracks from giants in the industry--namely Mandisa, Natalie Grant and their future mentor, tobyMac--Capital Kings stepped up to the plate in 2012 with a lackluster EP of entirely original songs. The duo's self-titled album built a sturdier foundation the next year, with a more solid offering of songs. One of the tracks off the self-titled, the radio hit "Fireblazin", was released as a single the subsequent year.
Technically speaking, this single release of "Fireblazin" isn't a single, but an EP. Any music release with more than three tracks qualifies as an EP. With the original song, the radio mix, and two remixes, I think this release fits the criteria.
History and semantics aside, how do these four versions of the song stack up? The original is the same as on the self-titled: a good track with electronic flair and punch. It's a bit of a lopsided punch, as the lyrics don't have the same level of creativity, in both message and delivery. Granted, singing about having a fire for the Kingdom isn't objectionable; it's just not anything we haven't heard before.
The radio mix of "Fireblazin" takes a more dreamy, down-tempo approach to the song, exchanging some of the electronic elements for acoustic guitar. Soul Glow Activatur's (of Family Force 5 fame) remix presents a more amped-up (and repetitive) version of the track. While it's not anything special, it does stay above the following remix, courtesy of Neon Feather. It's disheartening how often remixes fall short of providing an interesting take on a song. Keep in mind that not all remixes are terrible.
Long story short, these four variants are, to borrow the oft-repeated phrase, a mixed bag. It's actually more of a negative-outweighs-the-positive bag, which could also be applied to their discography as a whole.
