I've heard some of Skillet's old stuff. A few good songs here and there, but hardly "Top Band" material like their more recent offerings are. While each release(aside from Collide which is about tied with AY for me) did seem to get better, they just weren't a terrific band until Comatose. And I feel Awake definitely kept up that quality.
And no, I am not a mainstream music lover in any way, shape, or form. Heck, if I was, I probably wouldn't like it much. Maybe those who don't like it are those who DO listen to mainstream music a lot. Me? I don't listen to mainstream music a lot, so Skillet doesn't sound like any other band I listen to, hence why I say that objectively, their new album is just plain awesome! :D

I agree and feel the same, avalonfan, even though I didn't consider myself 'old' until now! Invincible and Alien Youth were the hotness when I was in high school!

I'm actually a college freshman. But I still prefer the 1995-2001 era of christian rock. Many good bands and albums came from that time period.

^^There's no doubt about that! And might I point out that the bands of that time had something meaningful to say in their lyrics at that time! Not afraid to bring it home for Jesus!

And this is why I (and older fans) will hold on to what they once were, and you will hold to what they are now. And I think I'll be alright with that.

I think what most of the Christian rock bands now have to say is just as important as what the bands back then had to say.

I totally agree with gymdude....the older rock wasn't afraid to come right out and be all like JESUS ROCKS!!! lol I think that Skillet is trying to cater to the "world" as well as the Christians too. ...which is ok.
But I will say that the new album is alright. I like more of their more heavy stuff....such as Collide and Comatose....but over all..Skillet is still one of my Favorite bands.

Hi everyone,
This thread is very long now, partly because other Skillet music is being discussed here. I asked previously to keep this to the new album only, and now we have to insist.
If this thread has outlived its usefulness, we can close it, but I'd hate to see that happen. Let's keep it on topic, PLEASE.
Thanks.

i find it funny how some of the songs contradict themselves though... like never surrender says "i dont wanna feel like this tomorrow" while in sometimes says "sometimes i dont wanna be better" I am NOT getting into an argument on how "ohh yea but hes saying sometimes not ALL the time" im aware, and thats not what im getting to. its just funny to listen to the songs back to back thats all :]

Yeah, listening back to back could present issues. But I think that this is not some story but rather presenting different types of emotions and feelings.

I'm not sure it contradicts at all...I forget where but in Romans Paul says He does what he doesn't want and doesn't do what he wants I think thats a pretty common feeling people have

thats exactly what my comment didnt mean... i just use terrible examples, contradict wasnt exactly the right word to use. i just couldnt think of a better one. i am very aware this is what people feel at times. all i was getting to was that it was funny...

Why shouldn't it be praised?. I personally think this will be the album of the year and this is coming from a guy who was sure Stryper's Murder by Pride was the best album of the year. As a fan from the very beginning this is by far, In my opinion, the absolute best album they have done. I like every song on the album and even think the ballads are amongst the best in music. I think it deserves every accolade that it is getting. Just my opinion of course

I think the replay value has been quite high, at least as high as Comatose and much higher than a good 90% of other things I've listened to, 85% if I'm feeling nice.

The replay value for me has been higher than Comatose, not to say that I don't think Comatose is better but I've been in the mood for it lately.

Well I can safely say that's the first time I've heard that opinion, and while I do like it more than the average joe outside of the CCM scene I suppose, I don't think it deserves the album of the year title. In fact it doesnt come anywhere close to that.
Just my opinion

Well, I certainly do not think it is a stretch. 2009 has been a great year, but until the second half, rather dull. So far, the releases haven't done much for me. Maybe not the best of all genres, but definitely in Skillet's hard rock genre, album of the year. :)

I've listened to Awake and while it was good, I didn't listen to it again. I guess it just had little replay value. Skillet still puts on a great live show but in my opinion they're just a little too overrated and their lyrics, a bit too generic. I dunno.

I don't know, there have been some AMAZING albums that just came out in the last few months, and even though I was a tad bit dissapointed by Awake, Skillet does pull off their genre pretty well and for that, they deserve my attention.

I would just like to say that the album was a tad dull to me, johns vocals seemed more (whats the word?) compared to comatose where he sounded more clean.

Well, John has quite a gritty voice. If anything, Comatose was put down for being too polished. Awake is a return to the pre-Comatose in that area, and it's also closer to how he sounds live.

Yeah, it seems a lot like Comatose with Collide-era vocals, which it turns out, is pretty good.

collide was more...rock? gravle-y? (which was pretty awesome[= ) comatose was real smooth and clean (also very good) -- Awake is a nice combo it's a little more rock than comotose, but has some of the same features of comotose --i like it. i like it a lot. [=

Not memorable? lol It was probably one of the most memorable releases of the year and the only one still in heavy rotation on my player. I'd argue it was quite memorable. And like a fine wine, it just seems to get better.

It was memorable all right, but not in a good way. In a way that if you listen to it too much you get so sick of it you go out of your away to avoid for a few weeks.

Wow, it's amazing how divided people are on this album. I really love Skillet and personally am really enjoying this album. Personally, I find it on par with the last two albums and most of the songs a very memorable and catchy. I definitely love the one-two punch of Hero and Monster.

Sleep to Awake and Alive? lol You can sleep to Awake about as well as you can sleep to Comatose, or any other Rock release of the past decade. lol ;) I mean I can sleep to Awake, just like I can sleep to "Welcome to the Masquerade" or "Memento Mori." You can sleep to anything you want to I guess, but I don't think that would make an album bad.

IMO, anyone who says Awake is the rock album of the year is forgetting a Project from O.C.
