06. Never Be the Same

Innocence & Instinct (Deluxe Edition)
by Red

I know You
Who are You now
Look into my eyes
If You can't remember
Do You remember
I can see, I can still find
You're the only voice my heart can recognize
But I can't hear You now, yeah

I'll never be the same
I'm caught inside the memories
The promises
Our yesterdays
When I belonged to You
I just can't walk away
‘Cause after loving You
I can never be the same

And how can I pretend I never knew You
Like it was all a dream, no
I know I'll never forget
The way I always felt with You beside me
And how You loved me then, yeah

You led me here
But then I watched You disappear
You left this emptiness inside
And I can't turn back time
No, stay
Nothing compares to You
Nothing compares to You
I can't let You go
Can't let You go
I can't let You...

I'll never be the same
Not after loving You
Not after loving You, no

I'll never be the same
I'm caught inside the memories
The promises
Our yesterdays
When I belonged to You
I just can't walk away
‘Cause after loving You
I can never be the same
I can never be the same
I will never be the same

I just can't walk away
No, I can't walk away, from You

Words & Music by Jasen Rauch, Rob Graves, Jason McArthur, Mike Seminari and Todd Nielsen

Behind the Song:
Epitomizing the “innocence” side of the album, “Never Be the Same” naturally overflows with upbeat energy, optimism, and a chorus that can’t be forgotten. “On the surface, it’s about a relationship that changes you forever,” says singer Michaei Barnes, whose soothing vocal performance resonates with depth and passion. In its deeper subtexts, the song is about standing in the crossroads between the past and the future, fighting forward without forgetting battles past. “Whether it’s a recovered addict looking back on that which once controlled him or a person simply reflecting on something lost or nearly lost, the song is about those issues that make up the chemistry of who you are,” explains guitarist-songwriter Jasen Rauch. “You've overcome it and it’s no longer a part of your life, but if you hadn’t gone through it, you wouldn’t be who you are today.”
