03. Never Gonna Be As Big As Jesus

Adios: The Greatest Hits (Special Edition)
by Audio Adrenaline

I could move to Hollywood
get my teeth capped I know I could
be a big star on the silver screen
just like James Dean I could be a star
I could climb the corporate ladder
buy, sell, and liquidate
Maybe be just like the Beatles
melodic rocking heavyweights
I could learn to sing and dance
if I only had a chance
I could be a big rock star

I could be anything I wanted to, I wanted to
I could be anything but one thing's true

Never gonna be as big as Jesus
never gonna hold the world in my hand
never gonna be as big as Jesus
never gonna build a promised land
but that's alright okay with me

I could build a tower to heaven
get on top and touch the sky
I could write a million songs
all designed to glorify
I could be about as good
good as any human could
but that won't get me by

I could be anything I wanted to, I wanted to
I could do anything but one thing's true

Never gonna be as big as Jesus
never gonna hold the world in my hand
never gonna be as big as Jesus
never gonna build a promised land
but that's alright okay with me

Words and Music by Barry Blair, Bob Herdman, Will McGinnis, and Mark Stuart. Produced by John Hampton © 1996 Up In The Mix Music (BMI)

Behind the Song:
“This song was off the Bloom record. I heard about the John Lennon comment about the Beatles being bigger than Jesus or being more popular at the time. We thought we should write a song in answer to that comment. The song is about how small we are and how incredibly cool it is to know that there’s never going to be another person to ever be the comparative of bigness of Christ, not just his popularity, but his love and compassion. That song marked when we really started to connect with the fact that we’re a guitar rock band. That song had a great riff and a great melody to it. We produced it in Memphis with a guy named John Hampton who had done the Gin Blossoms.” - Mark Stuart (Audio Adrenaline)
