When times of loss hit us, sometimes the best hope and comfort is to turn to the words of Scripture and discover a timely message. Such was the case for North Carolina singer/songwriter
Ricky Byrum in suffering the loss of his sister. Driven by grief and inspired by 1 John 4:4, Byrum wrote a dual-project that was half book (titled
Greater is He That's in Me (Than He That's in the World)) and half EP (simply
Greater is He). The title track off that EP gives hint to the trials Byrum faced, with the opening lines,
"You may feel broken/You may feel down/You may feel like there's no way out". But he doesn't wallow there, immediately noting,
"I've come to give His promise/Hope for today/There is a Savior/And He's on His way." That hope is delivered steadily throughout the track as the drums maintain a consistent, rhythmic beat. Musically, Byrum meshes a style that feels like Petra-meets-Stryper, with more of an emphasis on Stryper, especially in the guitar work. As a single, "Greater is He" serves as an interesting tease for the rest of the EP (as well as the book). It's an encouraging track that could serve as a sweet balm to those who need encouragement in the faith the same way Ricky Byrum did in his past.
