05. Drown

the deliberatePeople. album
by Phil Joel

Listen:

Lyrics:

Drown tonight
All this noise inside
Holy Spirit won’t you speak
I will be silent
I will be

I’ve been wrong before
By giving you the run around
And I can’t stand the thought
Of letting go the upper hand
I’m feeling crowded
Don’t want to be in this place
It’s getting way too loud in here

Drown tonight
All this noise inside
Holy Spirit won’t you speak
I will be silent

Take this heart of mine
Turn it to the divine
Break distractions
I will learn the sound of silence

So much static
In the rumors of a world of compromise
Always a little bit of truth
Disguising every good lie
Those poison lullabies
So out of tune
Yet they sound so right?
No, no!

Drown tonight
All this noise inside
Holy Spirit won’t you speak
I will be silent

Take this heart of mine
Turn it to the divine
Break distractions
I will learn the sound of silence

Tonight
I will be still
And know You’re God
I will be still and know You
I will be still and know You’re God
Push this white noise down
I will be silent

Drown my worldly distractions
And the calls to comfort and self satisfaction
When the world threatens the peace
That surpasses all understanding now
I will be still and know You are God

Music and lyrics by Phil Joel, Phillip LaRue

Behind the Song:
'A few years back, I had my hearing tested. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that after many years of loud stages and amplifiers my hearing was still 100%. As a parting gift, and maybe a sly precautionary gesture, the doctor gave me some earplugs. I started to use them at different times throughout the day. It wasn’t until I began to seek out stillness and quiet that I realized how noisy and full of distractions my life had become. Listening (to the Lord) is a whole lot easier when the noise is drowned.' - Phil Joel
