01. We Owe This To Ourselves

Dark Is The Way, Lights is a Place
by Anberlin

Since when did bullets start to sing?
(It didn’t have to end like this)
Is this the end of everything?
(It didn’t have to end like this)
I feel, I feel, we can’t stop here,
It didn’t have to end like this,

We owe this to ourselves,
We can’t just let this go,

We owe this to ourselves,
We just can’t let this go,

If every man became like king,
(We could start it all with this)
We could do more than just dream
(We could start it all with this)
Well I feel, I feel, the change is here,

We owe this to ourselves,
We can’t just let this go,

We owe this to ourselves,
We just can’t let this go

Behind the Song:
ABOUT THE ALBUM:
"The title was inspired by a poem by Dylan Thomas in his incredible poem ‘Poem on his birthday’; his poetry is so fluid and intriguing at the same time. I was exposed to him by our touring keyboardist Kyle Flynn, who now plays with Father John Misty.

To me this album was as close to a punk rock record as we would ever record, not musically, but in our mental state during the song writing. We did exactly what we wanted, how we wanted. I believe we were rebelling against everything we thought we needed to be on New Surrender; we just happen to have (debatably) one of the best producers in the world at the helm.

The title is a summation of how I feel lyrically Anberlin had been to that point; there is going to be so much pain in this lifetime, but that doesn’t mean it is not worth losing a single moment of it because at the end of the day there is going to be Hope. There is a better life out there you just have to find it for yourself." - Stephen Christian

ABOUT THE SONG:
"This song was originally supposed to be called KING but someone at the label didn’t like the title. (On our set lists its still called KING)

This song is about my High School hero Dr. Martin Luther King jr. I stumbled on a biography of him and everything I read completely inspired me, still to this day his words seep into my writing, his quotes find their ways into my songs.

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” -Dr. Martin Luther King jr." - Stephen Christian
