Rapper Bir Witness may be best known for frequently churning out Spirit-filled hip hop for the masses, but now the industry vet is sharing what he's learned in a new memoir, called My Megaverse Is Christ: A Memoir That Brought Me Closer to God. We recently chatted with Bir about the book, what readers can expect to find in it, and what's coming next from him musically...
This interview took place over email in April, 2024.
Bir Witness:
My wife pushes me to be the greatest version of myself how God sees me knowing all things are possible through his greatest gift of his son Jesus. When I met my wife, I was being recognized in the music industry like never before investing thousands of marketing and promotion dollars and hungry for more success. She said to me one day on the phone, "You need to make some more money moves," because she knew I could do more successful things than just be a rapper, and she had seen so much potential in me. I absolutely love her for her patient love. True love is patient and kind. I always helped artists using my foundation I worked hard for and prayed for, so I said I'm going to make a move to write a book and put it out independently. I never imagined I would be signing many contracts and being apart of the international TBN family where New York Times Best Sellers meet and greet. My wife really pushed me to keep writing. She said this book is gonna get us out the hood! *laughs* So we're excited for this opportunity of a lifetime. All that hard work from the very beginning is really paying off Big Time!
Bir: This title represents my relationship with Jesus and how I adapted to His creation as a creative because He’s the creator and redeemer from the beginning -- with the word and the word was God, from Genesis to the book of Revelation. I feel I captured this gospel in my own book and in my own life so that is the reason for the title.
Bir: I was a songwriter, producer, and performer mainly for myself and also others who signed major contracts. I'm very successful and connected to a lot of people in the music industry. I've done business with heavyweights in the industry - artists, producers, and engineers - I grew up listening to. I've had long conversations with executives, major label producers and engineers with a very successful catalog I still receive music royalties for today.
Bir: I came to Jesus at the age of thirty four and surrendered completely to his Will at thirty seven after fighting off the enemy since I was baptized at 36. Before that, I was learning, always learning, and still learning about Jesus. It took time, but I slowly took off all my successful secular mainstream music and eventually it was all taken down. I just left my first album for the music industry entitled Perfection. I spoke about the making of it in my book. Hardly any swears, just testimony music about making it to twenty one years old. And a lot of TV placements through my licensing agreement with a two-time Grammy winner. It's been 17 years of music royalties. CBS, NBC, and even the NBA TV channel has paid me many times through this deal.
Bir: Again my wife hooked that up! She saw an ad TBN was looking for book authors and she said, "Kabir, submit your manuscript and in Jesus Name it will be approved!" 2 weeks later, it was approved and 2 months after, I signed a Major Book Publishing contract. I will be in stores nationwide in most major retailers and I'm international everywhere books are sold! Go pre-order and get ready for the April 30th release!
Bir: I've been blessed to have a really good psychiatrist, therapist, and church family, but first and foremost Jesus been working on my mind, heart posture, and our relationship is of purity and truth. I have no symptoms of bipolar or schizophrenia. I'm completely healed and you can learn more in my book. It's definitely been a process full of grace and mercy.
Bir: This book breaks down my experience with Jesus coming from falsehoods and identity crisis. The music business is not about music -- it's really the money business. I'm teaching you about your true identity in the creator and redeemer and no matter what you have done, you can repent and receive Holy Spirit so you can navigate in your journey with true purpose, peace, and most importantly, love for music and express yourself in a mighty way for the kingdom of God.
Bir: All my aunts and uncles on both my mother's side and father's side believe in Jesus and what He did on that cross. I've seen examples of amazing Christian leadership. I've stepped to the altar many times and I always wanted freedom from religion to relationship, so being a disciple to a true living God is more than enough. I can always count on Jesus and I don't have to worry; He is the prince of peace. I've been locked in fourteen psych wards since the age of twelve, so I'm a witness to Jesus Christ's miracle that, if he can rescue me from gang culture, falsehoods, and mental illness, anyone can be free if you have faith and trust in Him and only Him. Give up everything not of God and surrender to His will. It's not boring, it doesn't make you weak. It's exciting, makes you stronger to know who you really are: a child of a King and he wants you to claim your victory on the right hand of God. [If you read the book, you can] dive deep into my memoir that brought me closer to God.
Bir: I'm a great multitasker. *laughs* Honestly, every full-length album you've heard, I produced, mixed, and mastered in a couple weeks! My next album Witness is 35 tracks and it's 2 hours long. I just finished it and it took only 3 months. I know what I want to hear and what the rest of the world wants to hear from me. I've been at it since fifteen and it shows in my work ethic. I produced, mixed, mastered my wife's album, my brother in Christ's album this year also, and I still have time for my family life, being a youth leader at my church with my wife, and perfecting my book. God flow, John. I honestly cannot explain how God is moving in my life right now! I was in 2 psych wards last year and before I submitted my transcript to TBN. I guess you gotta be crazy for Jesus instead of crazy for the world. Seriously though, that's a message!
Bir: I'm releasing my next album Black Thought May 30th, 2024. I got many choices; I'm on fire for God. I've been doing music professionally for 23 years and I play chess with these albums. I'm not Dr.Dre, it isn't Detox *laughs* It will come out when it makes sense, and I changed the title for the 3rd time. I keep adding to it and taking away. It's been a beautiful process. I don't want to speak too much about it; I want people to focus on my book and anticipate my next album Black Thought. That album is dark, hence the title, but Jesus shines through me on this album because He's been working on me. You will never be disappointed with my creative decisions, because I know when to move. I'm led by the Holy Spirit. I write powerful music because my experiences are powerful and my conversations are powerful, my church every Friday, my wife, my family at home, my brothers and sisters in Christ, my youth group at church, I'm a youth leader, compliments, my dad always said I was a communicator and he's right. I always got something to say and that's why this album that was called Witness a few days ago is now a whole nother beast because I experienced more, spoke to God and hit the studio a few times. I answer the question about Witness on separate days and I want this printed because creatives can relate to the process. The final title is My Name Good Everywhere. I'll say this: many people mentioned and everyone I've ever done business with wrote something for this book and I spoke on everything and realized every struggle and success brought me closer to God.
