Cool Hand Luke's Buy The Truth EP was released around the same time as The Sleeping House and is not one of the band's popular works. Nevertheless, this EP would make a lovely addition to anyone's music library.
Buy The Truth is, like all of Mark Nicks' music, poetic and thought-provoking. Really, the only "shortcoming" of this EP is its length; it includes only 3 tracks (one of which was also released on The Sleeping House).
"The Greater Dance" is an encouraging and reassuring song. "Height Nor Depth" shows strong scriptural influences. Although these two songs are outstanding both lyrically and musically, the highlight of Buy The Truth is the title track. "Buy The Truth" is a poignant reminder that the truth we have in Christ is of infinite importance and should never be traded for materialistic and temporary gains, "Buy the Truth, Though it costs all you have/Buy the Truth, Don't ever sell it out."
When I first heard Wake Up O Sleeper several years ago, my first thought was: "Wow, this band is awesome! Why are they not more popular?" Buy The Truth offers an answer. In the music industry, I imagine it would be very easy to exchange the truth for wealth and popularity. I earnestly believe that Cool Hand Luke is as underrated as they are for the simple reason that they did not "sell out" the truth, as so many people seem so quick to do. So, although Buy The Truth EP is not Cool Hand Luke's best work, it, from the opinion of an avid fan, it essentially sums up the band's entire purpose.
