K-Love Fan Awards 6/1/13, at Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN
On June 1st, K-Love held their first fan-voted awards show at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee and broadcasted live over the radio. The K-Love Fan Awards excelled at focusing efforts on artist performances, with nearly 30 artists taking the stage. It seemed like over the course of the weekend's events, each fan likely had the opportunity to interact with their favorite artist. At the red carpet before the show, there was only a small barricade separating the artists from the decked out fans. The show was clearly tailored to the attending fans, dressed in a varying mixture of jeans and gowns.
Hosted by the stars of TV show Duck Dynasty (which I admit to having never seen), and containing a wide range of award presenters (athletes, coaches, artists, and film producers), the non-musical segments of the show almost always induced crowd laughter. While seeing performances by names like Audio Adrenaline, Third Day, TobyMac, and Newsboys in one sitting is an experience in itself, the greatest pleasure of the night was the collaborations between the artists, such as a duet between Natalie Grant and Kari Jobe, Brandon Heath, Bart Millard, and Matt Maher performing "Hold Us Together," or Steven Curtis Chapman and Amy Grant sharing the stage.
While the nominations scarcely scratched the surface of all that Christian music has to offer (with no genre-based awards, for example), as a K-Love event, it certainly covered the largest players in Christian radio. Perhaps in future years, the option to watch a live stream of the show or listen to the show in its entirely following the event will become possible. But for an inaugural offering, K-Love certainly succeeded in providing a performance and fan-oriented awards show.
