Eddy Mann is a Philadelphia singer-songwriter who's made a name for himself in the Christian indie circuit with popular singles and prolific output. His latest album is a passion project of 12 worship tunes collected as
Chapel Songs. The feel of this record is very reminiscent of classic Maranatha! worship. In fact, through my first couple listens, I figured it was a cover album of older Calvary Chapel songs. That's not the case as Mann wrote all the tracks or at least put his touch on the compositions (such as for "Let It Shine" and "Amen!"). That classic style, though, doesn't make the set sound dated. Mann puts enough modern touches in to avoid that; just consider the opener "Hallelujah" where he uses a drum machine or some pads to build the atmosphere. Similar to how Marantha! songs tended to be simple in lyrics and melody, Mann's tunes are basic expressions of worship and gratitude. Sometimes there are promises of commitment ("My Alms"), or resting in the comfort of knowing God is with us ("I Never Walk Alone"), or looking forward to a future in heaven ("Where the Gates Never Close"). Through it all, there is nothing particularly ground-breaking about the way Mann approaches his songs. They're certainly well-produced, carefully crafted, and carry a certain "classic" charm to them, but they don't necessarily stand out among the multitude of other worship albums out there. Mann also has a tendency of fading out the songs too quickly, often producing a jarring effect on the listener. In the end, though,
Chapel Songs is a worshipful experience for the one who takes the time to sink into these songs. It may not stand out among the best in the field, but it can be a hidden gem to those who stumble upon it.
