Artistry is something that not all musical artists actually have. The combination of unique lyrics, excellent musicianship, and breathtaking vocals sounds like something easy to concoct with a good quality synthesizer, the latest "in-home" studio, and Google. For indie artist
Shauna Marie, she makes an honest and heartfelt effort with her latest release,
He Heals the Broken. The opening track, "Can You Hear Me," is layered with beautiful piano and is an open cry to God for her to be heard. However, the vocals seem to be buried under the layers of instrumentation that they sound slightly muddled together. Regardless, the track is a wonderful way to begin the EP. "He Heals Me" continues with slightly somber feeling but where the opener lacked, this track makes up the difference. Shauna's vocals are fantastic and the song is reminiscent of a mid-90's ballad - it seems very possible that this could be heard on local CCM radio stations. Introducing a more light-hearted sound to the EP are "Stay" and "Don't Wanna Miss Right Now." They show a more fun side to Shauna's vocals while still maintaining a serious undertone. The album closes with the powerful "Everything You Are." It's an excellent full sound that many listeners will really enjoy. To say the least, Shauna Marie has the potential to have a successful career in the CCM realm. Her sound is reminiscent of BarlowGirl and Sara Barilles - so many a lady may find something to love about this EP. My only complaint with the recording is that sometimes her vocals and the music feel as though they are competing for attention rather than complimenting each other. That's not to say that it occurs on every track, but it most definitely does on the opener. Nevertheless, Shauna Marie's artistry is certainly blooming and I'm sure we will hear more from her in the near future.
