Bir Witness Interview

With the release of his latest album, Tears of Mercy, indie artist Bir Witness answered a few questions from JFH's John DiBiase...
This interview took place February 3, 2024.

  • JFH (John DiBiase): Hey man, I'm stoked we finally have a moment to talk music. Tell us about yourself. What is the origin of your stage name, "Bir Witness?"

Bir Witness: Before I start, I just want to give you your flowers for being such a servant of God in the Kingdom and for your amazing art. I'm always admiring online how you perfected your craft through Christ's masterpiece of you, my brother! Amen.

My name is Kabir since birth. When I moved to the city of Brockton, Massachusetts from the hometown of Stoughton, I grew up and my name was just Bir from everyone that knew me in the city. I was just getting active with my music at the age of nineteen, back and forth to Boston for school working on my introduction to the masses as a rap artist. I needed a name for my album title, so I came up with Bir Witness. My walk with Christ gave me identity and detachment of who I thought I was, and my name Bir Witness became it's so much more important to me and others in the kingdom and music industry at large as I continued my journey into marriage to my beautiful wife, a family of two young Queens my step daughters, and our joy, my granddaughter.

  • JFH (John): (Thanks man, that's super kind of you to say!) So how did you get started in music? What sparked your passion for it?

Bir Witness: When my name was simply Bir, in the city of Brockton, I got the opportunity to be interviewed on a FM Radio station and I was an active gang member at the time so I was swearing, kept interrupting the radio personality, throwing up gang signs, shouting out members with inappropriate names, but it made me feel accomplished and I loved how even though I was out of my mind, I still achieved something monumental for my city I lived in. It sparked identity and purpose that brought about confusion, conflict, toxic relationships, anger spouts, impatience, brokenness, hate for other gangs, just falsehood all the way around, but I always believed in others with a heart for everyone who loves to see me win. I want to see unity in the creation, no more wars, less political views and more independence, more in-depth conversations about this state of emergency in music as a whole, because we all affect each other's motives, like that opportunity brought about my thirst for the water I could only achieve surrendering to Christ Jesus. I'm so much more than music.

  • JFH (John): What specific artists or influences have shaped your style?

Bir Witness: I was a big fan of what Interscope Records was doing with hip hop. My brothers in Christ Bizzle and Sevin's movements respectfully caught my ear and eye of the possibilities for my wife and my ministry.

  • JFH (John): What role does your faith play in your music, and how does it influence the themes and messages in your songs?

Bir Witness: I represent freedom, so my testimony will shock many because I've been to fourteen psych wards since I was diagnosed with severe bipolar and schizophrenia at the age of twelve. My freedom from mental health to a mental Christ is something you have to wait for in my book, "My Mega Verse Is Christ," I'm prepping up for. Freedom from gang culture, mental health prognosis, and deception of false representation of reality of what God is really saying to us. I represent Christ and a Christ perspective of purity and transparency, honest truth no matter how you perceive it in the flesh or wrong spirit. If you know, you know.

  • JFH (John): Tell us about your brand new album, "Tears of Mercy"

Bir Witness: This album is an eye opener to gang culture, falsehoods, and the false narratives and advertising of what this generation is misled by. I write, produce, and engineer everything led by Holy Spirit. This album represents my freedom and spirit of understanding, clarity, and wisdom of the harsh realities I was exposed to at a very young age. This Testimonial project speaks volumes to the spirit dismantling flesh in the refinement Fire of Jesus. Hard hitting production, great storytelling, and inspiring messages, high notes and levels of worship in rhyme.

  • JFH (John): If you wanted new listeners to hear one song that represents Bir Witness the most, which song would it be?

Bir Witness: "The One." It's exclusively on my YouTube channel now. I'm on fire for God and that recording excites and represents that. It's a recording from a mixtape I'm finishing up, Nachos and Thrones. lol. The title represents a joke with my brother in Christ about eating nachos with a Christ mind. Basically doing something simple in flesh, how they see it, but being right there on the right hand of God by allowing him to use you as a vessel with an understanding he gets all the glory and attention, all the respect, admiration, and love. So we do it with an open heart mind and spirit to be operated on by The Son while simply eating my favorite food: nachos! lol

  • JFH (John): What's a collab you're dying to have?

    Bir Witness: Bizzle.

  • JFH (John): What are your thoughts on the current state of CHH (Christian hip hop)? How might you like to see it change (if at all)?

Bir Witness: I love Christian Hip Hop. It keeps getting better and better. The music industry I was in, they said it was offensive, dead, mumbling rappers, but Christian rappers have the living breathing God inside of us all, Christ Jesus. We're basically unstoppable in his mighty name, Jesus. Amen!

  • JFH (John): What has God been teaching you lately?

Bir Witness: Obedience and self awareness, love and mercy, grace and forgiveness.

  • JFH (John): With "Tears of Mercy" now out, what's next for Bir Witness?

Bir Witness: I'm diligently working on my wife's solo Christian hip hop album, Back To The Garden. Look out for that! She's incredible and inspirational for women. Her name is Justified No More Lies

  • JFH (John): How can hip hop fans best connect with you online?

Bir Witness: @iambirwitness on Instagram and @birwitness on X

I'm on all streaming platforms as a Witness of Christ Jesus Miracle in my life.

  • JFH (John): Any last comments?

Bir Witness: God gets all the glory for my story!!! Amen
