Pete Orta: Born Again

Former lead guitarist for rock legends Petra, Pete Orta sets out with his first solo endeavor Born Again. Word Records worked with us to bring you the latest interview with the guitarist-turned-soloist. And as you can see, Pete just likes to keep things simple.
This interview took place on: 10/4/01.

  • Jesus freak Hideout: How would you describe the style of your debut solo album, Born Again?
Pete Orta: I've had the hardest time answering that question.

  • JFH: Why did you decide to title the project Born Again?
Pete: The title track sums up what the whole album is all about.

  • JFH: You are a very experienced musician (Grammy award winning guitar player with Petra). How does it feel different to be offering you first solo project?
Pete: Musically, I feel like I've done it all. But spiritually I feel like I haven't said anything yet. So, my solo project is my opportunity.

  • JFH: Tell us about teaching yourself to play guitar.
Pete: I got my first guitar when I was four years old. And growing up in an abusive home, it was my therapy. I had a beginner chord book and one Ray Charles song that set me on my way.

  • JFH: What is your favorite song on the album?
    Pete: "Beautiful"

  • JFH: What does your first single "Born Again" mean to you?
Pete: It's about a street kid that found God.

  • JFH: Do you have any specific place where you like to write songs?
Pete: No. But I have a specific guitar that I write songs on, a 1968 00-18 Martin.
  • JFH: What message do you feel you have to give your listeners?
Pete: Everybody has different experiences and will grab different things from different songs.

  • JFH: What inspired your final track on the final song "Liberty"? Born Again album cover
Pete: When I'm the most down in life I still feel the spark of God inside of me.

  • JFH: Where is the most interesting place you have been able to visit as a touring musician?
Pete: Seoul, Korea. The culture is so different from America.

  • JFH: Other than playing music, what is your favorite way to spend your time?
Pete: Playing with my kids. I have a 3-year-old girl and a 6-month-old boy.

  • JFH: What is your favorite home cooked meal?
    Pete: Anything Mexican food.

  • JFH: What plans are in the future for you and your music?
Pete: No plans. Everytime I make plans God sends me a different way.

  • JFH: Do you have any final comments that you would like to share with your readers?
    Pete: Keep the faith.
    Pete Orta
