These wonderful words
Are not magical
Oh so spiritual
And indivisible
I get so confused
When I see you
And the center of your ways
Just the center of your ways
I can't see you
I can't see you
My life is going up up
Oh to climb the walls these days
It's love, it's God
And I'm in it all
Who is your lord?
What's on your hands?
It's not the Blood of Christ
But the happiness of man
I can't see you
I can't see you
Paper-thin faith in nothing
Yet a chance to have it all
Please don't run away
When His love is so tall
You keep a cross around you
The new symbol, new style
Just stop for one moment
Think of this awhile
I can't see you
I can't see you
Behind the Song:'Center Of Your Ways' was written and recorded in 1991 for our release, 'Three Song Demo', which was, of course, a three song demo. 'Center' was not only the first song on that recording, but perhaps the strongest. It was also much more upbeat than anything we'd written previously, and Jesse grew to loathe playing it in concert because it would always hurt his hands. When we did play it, however, it was usually a good time. 'Center' was always notable for the driving 'bass only' intro, and the punk/rock outro that was tossed onto the end.
The lyrics are surprisingly deep -- especially for juniors in high school. As eluded to by the song title, the focus of the song is 'our focus', that is, the 'center of our ways'. What are our decisions based upon? Our music. Our clothing. Our words. Our faith. What drives us? What moves us? Though not many answers are given in this song, some lines are pretty clear - 'Please don't run away, when His love is so tall'. -
