Divorce is a topic that needs to be discussed more in the church in a healthy way. Too many Christians either dismiss or ignore its tragic impact it has had on culture today. Christian Hip-Hop artist Braille decided to tackle this controversial subject in masterful fashion. Breaking up the subject of divorce into 3 sections in this 4-minute song, Braille superbly discusses how divorce affects the adults, the kids and culture as whole in "Divorced from Reality."
Braille starts off by lamenting about the effects of divorce it has on the couple. He paints such a picture about the painful process, where "The ring box became a coffin." He then transitions into how this separation impacts the lives of the children. Sometimes people forget how much it can harm a child's way of thinking and feeling. Braille raps, "Got tired of the struggle now they shuffle them / like a deck of cards but the kids feel like jokers / Nobody knows who the queen or the king is." What a powerful way of describing how kids can feel through this life-altering transition. He then talks about how culture has just accepted this as reality ("We should be mortified but instead we normalize it"). Thankfully, Braille ends this song by pointing out the original purpose of marriage ("Marriage ain't a platform for selfish ambition / It's supposed to be a picture of sacrificial commitment)."
With nice production quality, this song is not only well done but needed for our society. The negative impact divorce can have is not something talked about that much, and Braille talks about it with amazing wordplay, unfiltered passion, and pure intentions. According to his Instagram post, "If God uses [this song] to warn couples away from divorce... to help people feel sympathy for those who have experienced divorce... to give a voice to those who have suffered from divorce, I rejoice." Braille's motivation for this song is just as admirable as the song itself. What else can I say about this song other than it's incredible.
