With the WOW Hits series attempting to evolve with the times, the series began releasing a DVD in 2001 with WOW Hits 2002 along with its usual VHS release. DVD is the absolute perfect format for such a project because it allows you to select whichever video you desire and watch it as many times as you want, skipping over those you would rather not watch. Quality-wise, some videos make the transition from VHS to DVD exceptionally well, while others tend to appear slightly grainy -- usually, the smaller budget videos.
The project opens with the sugary power-pop of "Dismissed" by ZOEgirl from their 2001 album Life, and continues with the worshipful sounds of "It Is You" by the Newsboys from their latest album, Thrive. What might seem a little misleading to some, is that the video for "It Is You" is merely their live performance at The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame this Spring which was released in its entirety to DVD in the summer. A highlight on the project, is the high-budget "Irene" from tobyMac which is presented here in letter box format and appears exceptionally clear. Equally deceiving on the packaging, is Third Day's "Come Together," which is a selection from their live performance at this year's 33rd Annual Dove Awards. The video, although still a cool inclusion for the Third Day fan, suffers from low video quality and only decent sound quality. Next is the beautifully visual concept video for Steven Curtis Chapman's tender ballad "When Love Takes You In." The power pop sounds of Jump5, a group with a younger projected audience, extends a hand to the younger audience with "All I Can Do," which continues with the young Rachael Lampa's "Savior Song." Out of Eden's reflective "Meditate" serves as a nice lead-in for the equally-as-beautifully-filmed forgiveness anthem "Ocean Floor" from Audio Adrenaline. Mark Schultz's encouraging contemporary pop tune "I Have Been There" fits among the themes of the project. Tait's anthemic and worshipful rock ballad "Altars" fits nicely while the project shifts gears to include the Creed-like Kutless and their single "Your Touch." Relient K's low budget, but fun nonetheless, "Pressing On" offers a little humor into the mix while Grits offers some hip hop with "Here We Go," and the final third of dc Talk's Kevin Max includes his creepy yet intriguing "Existence." Jeremy Camp's sad yet encouraging video for "Walk By Faith" will pull at the heartstrings while the fun and anthemic sounds of Bleach's "We Are Tomorrow" closes out the video compilation.
The WOW Hits 2003 DVD has a little something for everyone. While as a whole it may seem a little disjointed or schizophrenic in who the intended audience is, you can be sure that there will be at least one video on the project that you or your friends will enjoy. The WOW 2003 DVD serves as a great sampler of new tunes from old favorites and the up and coming stars.
