I went through a major change in my music tastes in the early to mid-00s. At the first end of the decade, I hated emo, pop punk, and screamy music (I was so young and naive!). By the other end, some of my favorite albums had come from those genres. This change was almost single-handedly thanks to Underoath. They’re Only Chasing Safety was a gamechanger. While most of the lyrics never really fit my life or experiences, I somehow felt connected to the raw emotions of them, and the balance of clean vocals and screams was something that, though still relatively new to me, implanted the ten songs straight into my brain. I know many people sing the praises of their Solid State debut, The Changing of Times; the album certainly changed the band's trajectory and brought them in front of a new audience, but They're Only Chasing Safety, in my opinion, is the album that really began showing people what the young men were capable of. There will never be another album like this.
