The Joshua Band is a modern indie rock band with the heart and soul of a classic rock band. The Atlanta band features Jason Hoard (vocals and guitars) and Mathew Mossburg (guitars). The duo has released four previous songs in 2024, and their newest single, "Spotless," marks the fifth one this year (with one final sixth one releasing in December). The track has a 70s vibe (while simultaneously sharing a 90s CCM sound) but doesn't necessarily feel dated. The driving guitar and vocal melody that hits on the chorus are like comfort food -- it's just really good. The song is a praise to Jesus Christ and a call to worship Him. The lyrics serve as a reminder for just who He is. In the chorus Hoard sings, "Lamb of God who takes away all our sin and all our shame. Oh, Lamb God. Oh, lamb of God." However, the bridge really gets to the core of the matter and is where the song's title is derived: "Holy, worthy, faithful and true. Mighty in glory, so merciful, Lord. Spotless Lamb of God. You are the spotless Lamb of God."

"Spotless" is a nice addition to the catalog The Joshua Band has been building this year. It's a rock song at heart, but it also crosses over genres to show some favorability to many listeners. You can't really go wrong with a song like this. An upbeat and driving number with a great melody and a wonderful message of praise is hard to beat. The Joshua Band is fairly new to the scene, but that doesn't mean they aren't worth checking out. Give "Spotless," or any of their other singles, a listen today.

JFH Staff's Second Opinion

The Joshua Band looks to be finishing 2024 strong with their fifth single, "Spotless." The band definitely has a firm grip on their style, combining bits and pieces of bands like Switchfoot and The Fray, with a hint of southern rock and radio-friendly pop rock. Though it may not be a sound that will help them stand out from a crowd, it is nice to hear them do it well. The musicianship is tight, vocalist Jason Hoard has a great voice for the genre, and the production is spot on. "Spotless" is a song of praise, which glorifies Jesus as "the spotless Lamb who bore the sin of man." The song is simple in its lyricism, but it's reverent and worshipful and should easily appeal to pop rock fans who love to sing songs to the Lord. The Joshua Band keeps pumping out quality singles, and I'm looking forward to hearing more in the near future. - Review date: 11/22/24, written by Scott Fryberger of Jesusfreakhideout.com

  • Jesus Freak Hideout (Michael Weaver): How long have you two been making music together? You've released five songs over the past few months, but this collaboration feels like it's between long-time friends.

Jason Hoard: Funny enough our friendship formed in June of 2024, but even from the first FaceTime on my iPhone 11, we just hit it off. Completing each other's musical sentences. I knew it would work with Mathew's love of guitar driven melodies. Right away we went in the studio and started creating.
Mathew Mossburg: I was very excited to meet Jason; I had been praying to find a producer and when Mack (Brock) introduced us I was over the moon (and a little nervous) when I found out all the artists he had worked with. He is also an incredible musician. But when we met in person I felt like I had known him my whole life. The first time we went into the studio we spent the first hour talking, praying and having an impromptu worship time. I love him like a brother, and we are so musically compatible that it is definitely the Lord's hand in all of this.

  • JFH (Michael): I hear a few different things when I listen to "Spotless." I notice classic rock elements (1970s inspiration), but I also hear things that remind me of CCM's heyday of the 90s. What bands inspire the type of music you make?

Jason: For me, Tom Petty is my mainstream influence, and in the CCM world I really love Josh Baldwin, Kristian Stanfill and Mack Brock. And of course my friend Mac Powell.
Mathew: I am very fortunate that my mom used to take my brothers and me to Christian concerts back in the 70s. As a little kid I've seen Second Chapter of Acts more times than I can remember, Keith Green, early DeGarmo & Key and others. In 1982 I was introduced to The Resurrection Band and that was it! As a songwriter, I can't point necessarily to specific influences, but a wide range of music that I need to feel, if that makes sense. Some of my favorite songwriters are Jackson Browne, Bob Seger and anything by Journey. I can't speak to the 90s of CCM music, I basically spent most of that decade backsliding, addicted to drugs and alcohol and very, very angry at and far from God.

  • JFH (Michael): I really enjoy the vocal melody in "Spotless." How did this come about? Was this more of a melody first or music first type situation? Or did it all just come together at once?

Jason: I'll defer to Matt for this one. He's the mastermind behind the melodies. He has an awesome sense of how the vocal lines work with the chord structure of the song.
Mathew: *Laughing* The funny thing is I can't sing to save my life. The last time the pastor asked me to sing at church, three people unconverted! Jason has some magical power to interpret what I'm trying to get out. I can't point to a method or technique for coming up with melodies or chord progressions, I just hear something in my head, or feel it in my gut, and try to get it on paper. I will say I've always been drawn to strong melodies and chord progressions in music. I was raised singing a lot of Hymns, my first album was Elton John's Greatest Hits and I'm a HUGE Journey fan. So Spotless, like most songs I write, just come out of something I am hearing or feeling.

  • JFH (Michael): Are all these singles leading to a full album, is the plan to just release songs as they are ready?

Jason: We want to build our audience by the singles route for now but speaking for me I'd love for us to release a full length sometime in the New Year.
    Mathew: What he said.

  • JFH (Michael): Is there anything in particular that God has been showing or teaching you throughout this process?

Jason: He is always faithful and just to lead and guide us along our walk with Him and journey through life if we listen with our heart.
Mathew: This response could take hours *laughing* or seconds. Let me just say I write songs that I need to hear; and what I need to hear daily, hourly, minute-by-minute is the Good News of the Gospel. It's certainly true for what Jason and I are doing together, but also true for every aspect of my life.

  • JFH (Michael): Are there any live shows planned for The Joshua Band?

Jason: We'd love to do dates next year and are working towards that. The Celebrate Recovery crowd is especially near to our heartbeat.
Mathew: 2024 was about getting established and seeing the public's response to our music, and we plan to hit it hard after the New Year writing, recording and performing live. Our love for Celebrate Recovery is, in part, from my involvement and Jason's interaction with some of the leaders in CR.
