Your brother died today for the fentanyl
Like my friend died this day from a bullet hole
You saw me through those deepest woods
Of a loved one’s despair
And when I think of where I stood
It feels so wrong to see you there
Feels so wrong to see you there
Should I console you on the phone
You who consoled me when I wept?
Found myself holding promises
Out that you first held out to me
Friend, can you feel it in your bones
That despite the storm we’re kept?
Faith is the road to flawlessness
Where violence will bend to victory
Violence will end and we’ll be free
Drove to Vallejo with your word
From the last Sunday sermon
God drove despair into the dirt
I can hear that you heard Him
But should the days feel dark as hell
Where we can’t see our Savior
I’ll speak the things you spoke so well
Returning the favor
I can’t pretend to know the pain
But I know all this hurting
In this fire Satan meant for only flame
Only gets our hearts burning
So I can’t wait to meet you at your door
Set apart for love’s labor
Where hell increased, hope increased the more
I’m returning the favor
Drove up Mt. Diablo praising God
From an ironic tongue

Surveyed the land the saints will trod
Till Diablo is done
Don’t it just warm your breaking heart
That the roads know their Paver?
Love completes everything He starts
That’ll hold you till later
This eucatastrophe we’re in
This penultimate story
Only His perfect hand could pen
Grief ascending to glory
Should it feel like a chasm, this divide
Friend, it’s thinner than paper
It will close when we bow with saints beside
Humbly down for our Maker
Returning the favor
