Worship-oriented band Michael Gungor Band is no stranger to the world. Having toured numerous concerts and conventions, they have satisfied the longing of many who desire more than the monotonous, mediocre worship music we have come to endure and bear with dulled ears. Recently being signed to label group Worship Together, they have compiled a collection of songs that speak a life of true worship. The result? Their debut entitled, All I Need Is Here.
The opener "Be Praised" is a rock anthem dedicated to the only One who deserves our praise and recognition, whereas "Giving It All" speaks of total abandon and surrender to our Lord. This particular track also showcases Michael and Lisa Gungor's harmonious vocals and their ability to blend together in perfect tune. "I Will Never Stop" is an upbeat declaration that serves as a crowd favorite and as a call to never cease lavishing love on our Savior. My personal favorite, "Ancient Skies," is an intricate worship ballad packed with raw emotion that illustrates the awesome glory of our God and how He reigns throughout eternity ("And You ride the ancient skies, You're amazing, Creation cries, So will I, You're amazing").
"Prodigal" represents His unfailing love and mercy expressed so freely in spite of our foolishness and pride ("I've tasted You're glory, And I left it there, You poured out Your Spirit, And I didn't care, Still You love me") and how His grace is so infinite and incomparable ("Nothing compares to what You've done for me"). "Grace For Me" can be described as a beautiful acoustic piece that slightly resembles something you may hear from Switchfoot's earlier works or Jon Foreman's current solo projects, while "Fly" combines folk elements with powerhouse guitar riffs and rapid drumming that occurs towards the end.
"You Alone" depicts our lives as being in God's control and not our own ("I am not my own, I'm Your's alone") and "Spotless" explains Christ's sole purpose while, at the same time, causes the listener to engage in a state of remembrance and gratitude. "Heaven's Song" saturates the atmosphere with praises to our King and His everlasting goodness ("God, You are good, You are good, So good, And Your love endures forever"), while "Glory Is Here" closes the album with choir-like chants as well as a special hidden track performed and sung by Michael Gungor himself.
This record is bound to be refreshing and enjoyed by all critics and fans who search for more than the average, modern worship we know of today. MGB provides contemplative lyrics, musical and instrumental diversity, and strong, smooth vocals that flow seamlessly throughout each song. All I Need Is Here is definitely a winner and may give this band the exposure they deserve.
