Mark Fonseca is coming fresh off the release of his single, "Arizona," with a new Christmas track, titled "No Vacancy." This soft tune begs the question,
"Is there room for the King?" The way Fonseca goes about asking that question is following a progression that begins with Mary and Joseph riding into Bethlehem looking for a place to stay. From there, Fonseca jumps to Palm Sunday, then the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, and on to His future return. Before he arrives at that final day, however, Fonseca draws inspiration from Revelation 3 and Jesus knocking on the door of the Church. Fonseca wonders if the Church has room for the King in our day and age. On the whole, it's a sweeping scope for a Christmas single, with a surprising twist of challenging lyrics for all the believers listening. This gives the song some playability beyond the holiday season and helps it stand out among other original Christmas tunes. What holds it back is the soft, sleepy arrangement. On one hand, it feels nostalgic and perfect for a church Christmas play. On the other hand, the piano and strings don't do much to spice up the song and make it more memorable. Perhaps an instrumental break could have done the trick, or adding other instruments to the back half. Still, the track is a worthy one to add to a seasonal playlist. "No Vacancy" taps into the spirit of Christmas, but also looks beyond to Easter, today, and the end of time.
