Since 1996, Chris Rice has become known for his infectious music and clever lyrics, as well as for his youth camp music leader persona. Now, eight years into his career, he releases Short Term Memories, a collection of greatest hits, as well as live favorites, and three brand new tracks. While long time Chris rice fans will enjoy the five unreleased tracks, new fans should pick this one up as an introduction to one of the most beloved names in CCM.
Short Term Memories opens with the song that made Rice famous. His first big hit, "Deep Enough to Dream" contains the timeless lyrics "Deep enough to dream in brilliant colors I have never seen. Deep enough to join a million people for a wedding feast. Deep enough to reach out and touch the face of the One Who made me. And, oh, the love I feel, and the peace… do I ever have to wake up?" Chris Rice's songwriting is some of the best in Christian music, and it was fully apparent from the start.
The first of three new recordings follows "Deep Enough…." "Go Light Your World" is a slow piano ballad about letting Jesus light up your life for Him. The song was previously made popular by Kathy Trocolli, and Rice does a wonderful job of covering it. The other two new tracks are equally as impressive. "Mama Prays" is a camp favorite and has finally found its way onto a CD. Rice sings about the beauty of growing up in a Christian home. And a new acoustic version on "(Untitled Hymn) Come to Jesus" rounds out the new studio material.
The two live tracks, "Clumsy" and (Arguably Rice's most popular song) "The Cartoon Song," are well done. "The Cartoon Song" has been previously available live, but "Clumsy" is all new.
The rest of the disc takes you on a trip through eight years of nearly flawless music. There is really nothing not to like about this project. All his best songs are here and the new material is impeccable. Each and every fan of Chris Rice should most certainly pick Short Term Memories up. Non-fans should consider giving Chris another look, and this record is the perfect place to start.
