Poor Old Lu had some transformation take place on their sophomore effort having John Goodmanson (Saliva, Soundgarden) produce this album, Sin, along with the band. Even though this album was only released a year later than Mindsize, the sound had almost changed into another brand of music. Sin leans more towards mild grunge-alternative, while Scott Hunter provides a more dominant vocal range during the choruses of songs like "Bones Are Breaking" and "My World Falls Down."
"Complain" is a great track to start the album, lyrically focusing on reasoning with complaints. Next, "Bones are Breaking" begins nicely while leading to an aggressive chorus, "Well, I can't hold this weight upon my shoulders anymore- my bones are breaking." "My World Falls Down" has a great intro including raw guitar work from Aaron Sprinkle, thematically showing that one needs Christ. "Slow" is another great song with a consistent mellow beat throughout, but it picks up some pace during the chorus. "Hope for Always" is a highlight that will likely be a favorite, providing a country sound during the build up of the chorus while offering some really nice vocals from Scott. "Canon-Fire Orange" is a very unique song that is completely different from anything Poor Old Lu had done previously and even possesses some Spanish overtones. "Ring True" introduces Aaron on lead vocals, and it works well enough that it could have easily been a radio hit with some promotion. "Sickly" is a very dark, slow song that is dismissible among the other tracks. "Come to Me," written and performed by Jesse Sprinkle, is a wonderful instrumental track.
Fans of great alternative music or those who love grunge should seek this album out. Sin provides a new journey after the album Mindsize with more variation, more aggressiveness, and some extraordinary songs that continue Poor Old Lu's legacy.
