R-Swift is one of those straight-up rapping dudes. You know what I mean; the kind of cat who doesn't try to blend the smooth R&B sound and won't be categorized for radio play. Hailing from Philly, this rap veteran is dropping his fifth studio album Apply Pressure, courtesy of a new label, the Rhyme Council Music Group.
Right off the bat, you get exactly what you expect when popping in a Swift album: gritty rhymes laid over some hot beats that send Christ-worthy messages. The title track, "Problem" and "Raindrops" all live up to expectations and get the release off to a great start. "Dear Mr. President Part 2" comes along as a follow-up to the original "Dear Mr. President" from 2009's Anthem album. The track takes a direct approach, speaking directly to President Obama and bringing up valid points lyrically such as "is murder dictated by age" while rapping on gun control and abortion. Up next is the powerful and haunting "Don't Go," where R-Swift spits from the perspective of the unborn life while speaking about abortion. The blend of tight raps and Alena Trimiar's soft vocals make for arm-tingling harmony.
The album stays strong as it plays; "Love Story" is a decent track with an old school vibe, "Looking For Trouble" will all-around be enjoyed by many rap heads, "April 19th" pours out raw emotion, and "RCMG" (a play off the record labels initials) is one of those cypha-style raps songs for all to love. This album is superb for the rap genre, but definitely doesn't have something for everybody. As mentioned earlier, this is straight-up rap that doesn't stretch toward the creative. However, what is done here is done extremely well. The beats are hot, the rapping is tight, and the focus is Godly, making Apply Pressure a chance to be in the "best rap album of the year" category.
