When the needle touches vinyl or the digital stream begins to flow, there's a moment of anticipation -- an invitation to explore uncharted musical landscapes. Deep AL Brindle's latest album, Are You Nervous? beckons listeners into a realm where indie rock meets introspection. Diego Castellanos and Alastair Wilson, the creative forces behind the moniker, have woven a tapestry of sound that's both haunting and hopeful. As the opening chords resonate, we find ourselves on the precipice of something that rides the line of nostalgia and new -- a sonic voyage that promises vulnerability, contemplation, and perhaps a touch of nervous excitement. Building on a promising foundation, the duo's latest offering is a wellspring of artfully impactful indie rock music.
On the previous two EP offerings from the band, the clear focus was on creating an atmosphere for the music to take you on a personal journey, and with this, their first full-length, that formula has been refined and expounded upon. From the opening atmospheric touches of "Yesteryears," that bleed straight into the first instrumental track, "Festival," fans of the band will quickly find themselves in comfortably familiar territory. "Serious" is the first hint that there is something different, quite possibly unique, about the journey you are embarking on, with the addition of vocals as Castellanos and Wilson delve into introspective lyrics that are at one point cryptic yet forthright in their intent as a confession of struggling with self-worth inside the bounds of a relationship. This juxtaposing of dreamy and ethereal atmospherics with lyrics challenges the listener to dig deeper into their meanings, adding a layer of depth that is missing from the previous efforts.
The partially-named title track continues in the same vein of offering some of the most beautiful ethereal indie rock music being put out, and pairing it with a poetic ambiguity that could be taken as a cry to God or a relational challenge, "You've hardly noticed/ I'm fighting for my life/I'm deeply shaken/ my heart is open/entirely not broken/I'll be alright." This is where the album seems to falter, when it leans so far into the metaphorical that it bleeds into a sense of obscurity. A balance of metaphorical richness and emotional resonance would have connected more deeply with the casual listener. However, the truth be told, the casual listener is not the ultimate aim for Deep AL Brindle, as they seem to be bucking against the trend of sameness by making music as creative as their own.
Are You Nervous? invites the listener to embrace that nervousness -- to let it wash over you like rain on a summer afternoon. Deep AL Brindle has crafted a soundtrack for those moments when we question everything: the past, the future, and the spaces in between. Diego and Alastair invite us to explore our fears, doubts and hopes through their music. As the final chords of "Goodnight" fade into silence, we're left in quiet contemplation, considering our own nervousness. Perhaps that's the magic of this album; it mirrors our humanity, as imperfect and beautifully fragile as our lives are. So whether you find solace in the haunting melodies, or find yourself dancing with abandon through uncertainty, remember that music, like life, is a journey. And sometimes, being a little nervous is the first step toward something extraordinary.
