Lost Ocean
Could This Be Love?

Artist Info: Discography
Album length: 14 tracks: 50 minutes, 46 seconds
Street Date: November 6, 2009

Almost two years have passed since Lost Ocean released their self-titled debut on Credential Recordings. Since that time, these Bakersfield boys have released one EP and changed their label status to "independent." Now with a self-released sophomore record under their belt, Could This Be Love?, these guys have established themselves as an indie rock favorite.

"Lately I Can't Fly" opens up the record, accompanied by the familiar piano melodies and unique vocals that Lost Ocean is known for, followed by "Good Morning," a positive, upbeat tribute to friendships and new days. "Part of You" describes a guy who attempts to show a girl how he feels about her, while the techno flares of "Close to Me" reveal his desire to be close to her ("No I can't sleep, come close to me, tonight…like air to breathe I need you close to me"). The soft piano tunes and rhythm guitar riffs of "Every Word She Said" continues the theme of "boy meets girl," whereas "Hours Away" produces a bit of a folk sound, which is an incredibly different approach for Lost Ocean. This track also makes mention of our Lord by name ("I bow down and thank you, Lord, for keep us, guiding us and leading us home").

"Come My Way" and "Looking Up" both illustrate Lost Ocean's signature sound, with the latter resembling elements of The Fray. "Dance to This Heartbeat" is just a happy, upbeat track that you can dance to, while "What We Do" returns to the topic of romantic relationships. "Lose Your Love" and "One Last Goodnight" retain the idea of earthly love, while "You Are All I Need" shifts the focus to the spiritual love between us and our Creator. "Love Medley" concludes the record with instrumental versions of tracks like "Come My Way" and "Lose Your Love."

The main recurring theme of this album is not surprisingly "love." Pretty much every track mentions a love shared by two people ("Part of You," "Every Word She Said"), but there is one clear indication of God and His love which are found in the following lyrics: "You are all I need, love unchanging."

Overall, Lost Ocean's sophomore release isn't anything groundbreaking and its lyrics are at times cliché and maybe even a bit dull. However, if you enjoyed their debut as I did, you will have no trouble enjoying their latest, Could This Be Love.
