It is never easy being the "New Kid" in school. On the same note, it is not easy to be a new artist in a well established industry. Enter newcomer Eoghan Heaslip. He might be launching as a new artist here in the States, but apparently he's got some experience under his belt. With the assistance of producer Nathan Nockels, known for his work with Tim Hughes and Matt Redman, we are given Introducing Eoghan Heaslip.
First off, let me say that this is not going to be everyone's cup of tea. He has adult contemporary tendencies with worship overtones. If you spliced together the genes of Chris Tomlin and Carman you might find that you've magically created Eoghan Heaslip. From the first note of the first track you can pretty much see where the album will go and where it will end.
The album begins with "Blessing, Honour." Though it is great when a song can pull from scripture, this opening track didn't really make a great first impression. With the verse simply being, "Blessing, Honor, Glory and Power be to our God, forever," the melody drags and doesn't tread into anything original. And so continues the rest of the EP with lyrics and melodies that have already been done. However, that is not to say that the album has nothing to offer. The instrumentation, though sounding the same from song to song, has a very peaceful sound filled with piano and acoustic guitar.
What you can expect from Heaslip is what you will hear on Christian adult contemporary music radio stations. For corporate worship, his lyrics are simple enough for an adult congregation to sing along to, but might remind them of a song they've sung before. So if you're looking for a new worship artist, you'll find it with Eoghan Heaslip. If you're looking for something fresh, new, and original… keep looking.
