Anthony Evans
Letting Go

Artist Info: Discography
Album length: 11 tracks
Street Date: March 7, 2006

Anthony Evans returns with Letting Go, his sophomore release from INO Records. If you are unfamiliar with this work, Evan's undeniably has a great voice, and the production of the album goes a long ways in making him sound even better then he already is. When I first listened to Letting Go, I found myself drawing comparisons to a plethora of different artists through Evans' song selection, which often distracted me from the message of this album.

"Good Enough" starts with several Aerosmith-like guitar riffs that leads into a song that reveals to the listener that there is nothing we can do to receive salvation, God is the person that makes us "good enough" to receive it. This song is Letting Go's most unique musical track, and for that, it deserves mention.

"I Choose Now" is the record's first single, and is about humanity loosing its way on the path to knowing Jesus, and how the world will be humbled upon His return. Although the chorus is not that catchy, it is still one of Letting Go's better songs, if only sustained by its powerful message.

"The Fight" is representative of the rest of the songs on the album - very average. It sounds a lot like what most any popular Christian pop group releases to the radio in both music and dynamics. While I agree that radio play is very important in sustaining an artist's career, eight songs that could pass as the same single is going a little far.

There is no questioning Evans' vocal talent, or this album's production and honest message. Evans deserves commendation for always keeping his message spot-on, never trying to shroud it in something that might sound appealing to mainstream radio. However, a great album needs more than just a good message. Letting Go offers almost nothing besides redundancy and comparisons musically, and you need more than that to make a great record.
