Ever since hip hop/pop artist PEABOD parted ways with his label, Centricity Music, and re-entered the independent realm, he hasn't slowed down for a second. One could argue that the quality in some artists' music dips when they leave their label home, but thankfully that hasn't been the case for Isaac Peabody. Following 2023's singles "Better Than Nostalgia" (Ahem, which you can download totally free on JFH's latest free indie music sampler! #shamelessplug), "Deep Cuts," "Pink Lemonade," "You Always Find Me," and his latest release from August (a love letter to his wife) "Oranges," PEABOD is back with "Lifetime Supply." His lyrical topics are often varied, but always relevant, and "Lifetime Supply" is no different.
I've often likened Isaac's work to the that of TobyMac or John Reuben in the sense that it's hip hop with a pop glaze. (And who doesn't love glaze? Pass me the Krispy Kreme, please.) "Lifetime Supply" leans into the pop melody even more so than usual - which makes sense given his origin in pop and folk music before diving headlong into hip hop - and it works to keep his music sounding fresh and diverse. The lyrics focus on how we shouldn't be afraid to go out and live our lives to the fullest, because, afterall, we have a "lifetime supply," but Peabody gives it a faith spin as usual, which is often one of the many charms of his music (and recaptures some of the magic of the Christian music of days gone by).
The chorus encourages us to "Come out and play / Don't give a second of time away / Make trouble, make noise, laugh till it aches / How will you spend your time? You got a lifetime supply..." And then he buttons it up with "We all gotta spend our time / What will you buy with your lifetime supply?" It's a song that packages a thoughtprovoking and encouraging message into a catchy pop single.
At this point in 2023, PEABOD has given us 6 new songs now, which could easily make up an EP, but as we continue to float down this single-based river we call today's music world, fans can continue to enjoy bite-sized treats from their favorite artists all year long, instead of one hefty meal in the form of an album (of which PEABOD hasn't released since Centricity put out Healthy Snacks five years ago).
With or without a record label, PEABOD continues to deliver one memorable track after another, and while I come from that old school of albums over singles, it's still nice to get bits of new music from time to time more regularly. If you haven't heard PEABOD yet, his latest single truly is a nice way to spend a little of your time.
