Jason Morant is a perfect example of a gifted artist who has somehow flown under the radar in Christian music. Open, Morant's follow-up to his debut release, Abandon, showcases his adept ability to craft meaningful songs that defy the stereotypes often accompanying the worship genre.
From the first song, "Open," it is clear Morant's sophomore effort differs from his debut. The song begins slow and works up into a satisfying chorus, with Morant reminding listeners of the importance of love. The second song, "Come Let Us Return," is equally appealing and has slightly more of a rock edge. Other standout tracks are "Holy," "Offering," "All of Me," and "At Your Feet." However, there is not a weak song in the bunch. The album ends with the soft, piano-laden "Hosanna," a fitting conclusion. Open also boasts two instrumental tracks, "Postlude," and "51st."
Lyrically, Morant keeps the focus on Christ without being too obvious. While all the songs could easily be used in worship, they are more "artsy" than those found on Abandon. There is no soaring "Love Song," on this album, but perhaps there does not need to be. Open may not be as accessible for church gatherings, but its richness and quiet power invite personal contemplation.
Morant manages to expand on his sound with Open, and he delivers a memorable album sure to please those who take time to listen. Like a vanilla latte, Morant's songs are smooth, inviting, and good to the last drop.
