Reflective art is the phrase that comes to mind when describing Cindy Morgan's long awaited release Postcards. Returning from a well-deserved five-year hiatus, this respected and established artist utilizes real-life experiences as inspiration for this new project. While no stranger to success (after all, Morgan has twenty number one singles and multiple Dove Awards to her name), Postcards is sure to be another hit with its honest lyrical content and classy production.
It's obvious from the beginning that Postcards is all about what Morgan has to say, and the musical arrangements are simply used to compliment her vocals. That's not to say the album's instrumentation is bland or unoriginal, as evidenced in the country feel of "Where You Are" and the pop-inspired "Eternal Sunshine." Rather the honesty and thought in Morgan's lyrics take the center stage. Postcards is contemplative in some places, blunt in others. "Eternal Sunshine" ponders the mysteries of heaven while "Mother" is one of those moments where Ms. Morgan openly exposes the hurt and pain that comes with an estranged parent/child relationship. No matter the subject, this multi-talented singer remains poetic and upfront.
On the title track, Morgan desires to make a personal discovery singing, "I've searched and I've traveled / My life's been unraveled / I don't know where this will lead... I'll send you a postcard / From my journey to me." "Glory" quietly rejoices in the renewal and hope found in Christ. Piano-based "Oh What Love" and "The River" are a couple of enjoyable, softly sung tracks. Postcards is consistent throughout in the its lyrical and musical quality, a real rarity in today's musical age.
When all is said and done, Postcards is an excellent return from Cindy Morgan. Her journey of discovery and renewal over the past several years have proven to be a deserving inspiration for this standout project. Wherever Morgan's career is headed, it is one well worth following.
