This four piece band was originated in southern California... which explains their Beach-Boy, rockabilly sound. The opening song, "Foo Foo Flirt" is a very motivating, and an all-around fun song. "John 17" is similar to the first in the style, but it was easier to see the biblical point in this song. "O My Soul" was a very catchy, 'Johnny B. Goode'-esque song, that suffers from repetition towards the end. "Loaded Gun" has a mysterious beginning that caught my attention with "Fast Lane Sinner" possessing an energetic and infectious sound. The swingabilly sound that they have just makes anyone want to get up on their feet. "Little Angel" is a sensitive song liable to lead the listener to tears. The song paints a beautiful picture of a father and daughter dancing to at a wedding. Overall, Ruby Joe's Hot Rot Deluxe is an acquired taste and not for everyone, but fans of The W's, Beach Boys, and quality rockabilly will want to check out this lively recording.
