After a four-year hiatus (as well as some delays), pop-rocker Nate Sallie is finally back with a new look, a new musical vision, and a new album, Ruined For Ordinary. Sallie's new album is quite a departure from his 2003 debut. Inside Out was chock-full of pop/rock anthems, including the title track, which took over Christian radio, and was even featured on mainstream radio. The differences between Sallie's debut and Ruined For Ordinary include more piano and a jazzy feel throughout, a little less guitar, while showcasing some of his true talents as a singer.
Some of the pop feel is still evident in some of the tracks, such as "Undercover Belief." But with songs like the worshipful "Holy Spirit" or "What I Believe," you would never expect from 2003's Nate Sallie. There's a lot to love from this new installment, but it's not all fun and games, as Sallie hits on a lot more serious topics, and more mature songwriting that shows a major departure from his debut. Highlights like this include the straight piano-driven "What I Believe," the funky jazz flavor of "Look At Me Now" and the rock-tinged "Lone Ranger."
Nate Sallie has come a long way from his debut four years ago, and it will be up to his fans whether it's for better or worse. In a major sense, things have improved all-around in his music, but big fans of his older work will most likely find little to love here. It's still worth giving Sallie a chance though.
