There's no lack of new faces in Christian rock as of late. Some are better than others, but it's very nice to see so many fresh faces taking their turn in the spotlight. Flicker's latest contribution to this cause is in the form of subseven, a band that is very hard to describe. And usually, the indescribable bands are the ones to keep your eyes on.
If you want to get generic, subseven could be defined as an emo/rock band; but they are so much more than that. From the opening guitar riff on "Emotion," to Wesley Fite's scream on "Dirt Roads" to finish the EP, the passion for the music and for God is very relevant.
The name "subseven" is a mixture of the word "submissive," and seven, God's number. Hence, "submissive to God." The reason for the name is fully apparent in the lyrics, which is most notable on "Faded Letters," "I don't want things my way. My delight is in You, my Holy Lord. And on "Game of Love," they marvel at God's grace as they chant To think that I'm Your favorite…to think that I‘m Your Son." From beginning to end, these guys have a passion for God, and they're not afraid to tell you about it.
By far my favorite new act of the year yet, subseven has a lot going for them, and very little going against them. From passionate playing, to passionate vocals, to passionate lyrics that point straight to God, subseven is a band to keep your eyes on. If this EP is any indication of what is to come (And I'm fairly confident that it is), expect great things in the future.
