Fireflight, the already critically acclaimed hard rock outfit from Flicker Records, has finally unleashed their national debut The Healing of Harms. While the strength of lead-singer Dawn Richardson's voice significantly lends to the appeal of the album's eleven tracks, it is the dynamic melodies and knock-out message that propel this album into greatness.
"Serenity" and "Waiting" are two very good reasons to listen to this album. In the latter, Richardson does not sugarcoat her spiritual desires. On the chorus she sings, "I'm waiting/ I'm waiting/ for you to call my name/ I'm waiting/ I'm waiting/ for your love." Music that removes the gloss for our need and thirst for Jesus is refreshing to hear! Also, the production lends itself greatly to the project's raw nature by leaving the guitar tracks a little rough around the edges, all the while keeping the vocals crisp and clear.
"You Decide" has enjoyed some radio success, but would not have been my pick for a single. Although it remains a great song, it is several shades darker than what this album really is. The dynamic "Liar" marks the middle of the album, and was also previously featured on their On the Subject of Moving Forward EP, which was released back in 2004. Later on in the record, things go out with a bang in the crowd-moving theme "Action." Richardson asks, "Can anybody hear me/ Can anybody see me/ Does anyone really understand/ We're looking for some action/ We need something to happen/ No more waiting nights and days/ We're looking for some action!" Needless to say, by the end of this track, they've got it.
One thing is for sure, Fireflight is one of the few new groups this year that I hope survives 2006's already bolstering freshman roster. These guys (or in this case, guys and girls) can really rock, while at the same time callin people into action for Christ. Commanding, roaring, and determined; Christian music needs more groups like Fireflight.
