Fighting Instinct, Under The Gun: Deluxe EP
Fighting Instinct
Under The Gun: Deluxe EP

Artist Info: Discography
Album length: 9 tracks: 31 minutes, 24 seconds
Street Date: October 28, 2008

Rock trio Fighting Instinct hails from North Carolina and their first release - which was self titled - came out in 2006 courtesy of Gotee Records. Their brand new EP, Under The Gun, which is also their last release, is entirely self-released via iTunes. Their sound can be best described as a southern rock style mix reminiscent of secular bands like Nickelback and Puddle Of Mudd.

The EP, which is available in a basic 5-song version or a beefed up 9-track "Deluxe" edition (which is what is reviewed here) starts off with "Desperate," a loud rock anthem about needing God and His love in our lives to help us to make it through. "Road to Carolina" carries some nice guitar riffs, while "With My hands Up" and "Tonight" offer a more ballad/worship style sound. "Come Home" showcases the band's better lyrical side with, "If my heart could open doors; what would I find out in yours?" and sends home a message about having God help us see more clearly. However, the best track here is "Stop Me Cold," which offers the best production, great lyrics, and an overall quality sound for the entire song.

Tracks like "Take My Life" and "Steal Away" are basic fillers that offer nothing too special to the listener. The overall sound of Fighting Instinct can be heard on any rock radio station and there's just nothing here that grabs my attention and makes me want to keep listening to them. If they come on the radio while driving in my car, I wouldn't necessarily change the dial, but I wouldn't turn the volume up either. Being that this is their final effort as a band, only diehard fans need apply.
