Tico Hudson, also known as Khul Rhema, is an established producer in the world of Christian hip hop. He has worked with many artists, such as Lil' Irocc, producer Dallas Austin, and his own crew, the Ziklag Boyz. The rapper has now decided to continue his career with his debut solo venture, What The World Needs Now.
Khul Rhema's sound and style of hip hop is quite reminiscent of secular artists Lil Jon and supergroup OutKast. It has the feeling of a very home-felt, down South flavor, while keeping Christ centered in the foreground. The only thing that could hinder the album is the slur of Rhema's raps. Many songs like the beat driven "Get Loose," "I Represent Him," and "Praizin' God" have excellent beats, yet the meaning of each song is somewhat lost because even after a few listens, it's difficult to figure out what's being said. Many songs also have a party feel to them, like "Throw Em Up" and "Almighty $," and are meant to be seen and experienced live. However, "Throw Em Up" features a chorus that sounds like the same words repeated over and over, and a lot of yelling, which makes for quite a dull song.
The biggest highlights on the album are the party track "Praizin' God," "Almighty $," and the truth-laden album closer, "Not Perfect." I listen to a lot of Christian rap and hip-hop, and these are the only few tracks on the entire 15 track album that I was able to understand the lyrics the first time around. Fans of the genre and fans of Rhema's production talents may find substance here, but if you're looking for a good down South feel in your hip-hop, take a listen to Grits or Lecrae first.
