Sometimes being excessively positive can be seen as a knock on your character, like somehow you are shallow and not in touch with reality. But we all know genuine people in our life who were just born to be positive and are still sober-minded and centered; that's just their nature. Christian music may make much of its selling point in being the "positive alternative," but there's still a host of artists in the genre for whom sharing encouragement is a sacred and noble duty.
Love & The Outcome is just such an artist. And their new EP, You Got This, is a needed dose of true positivity (grounded in gospel hope) and fresh perspective.
With a bright pop sound that closely mirrors fellow Canadian pop star Carly Rae Jepson (of "Call Me Maybe" fame), Love & The Outcome traffics in shiny, polished music that has real heart, and even a few nuances here and there. On the catchy title track, vocalist Jodi King offers up a slight twist on the excessive positivity when she says, "I don't know the way / But You got this / Give me the faith / That You got this / Even today You got this."
With a number of songs in this same vein (the opening, glossy "Where You Are" and the sincere "Imperfect") the EP, alas, doesn't offer much of a variety in sounds. But it ends well with the emotional release of "Moving On," a beautiful prayer for strength to close a painful chapter in a life.
Just because a song is poppy and uplifting doesn't have to mean it's shallow or vapid. True inspiration is a spiritual gift, and one Love & The Outcome is happy to share. With a little more creativity, this uplifting band could one day soon match their heart with their artistry.
