When the Lord told the Israelites to go in and possess the land He promised them, their first reaction was fear and doubt, so He tried to reassure them. “You may say to yourselves, ‘These nations are stronger than we are. How can we drive them out?’ But do not be afraid of them; REMEMBER WELL what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt.” (Deuteronomy 7:17-18 NIV) What was the Lord doing? He was trying to shift His people’s focus from fear to faith by saying, “Stop rehearsing your problems and shortcomings, and start remembering how I have delivered you in the past, so that your confidence in Me will grow.” The Amplified translation reads, “You shall remember WITH CONFIDENCE what the Lord your God did…”
The Lord goes on to remind His people of how with a “mighty hand and outstretched arm,” He rescued them from their Egyptian enemies. And He tells them, “The Lord your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear.” (v. 19 NIV) In other words, God was just as able to defeat their NEW enemies as He was their former enemies. And He warns and encourages them at the same time when He says, “Do not be terrified by them, for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a great and awesome God.” (v. 21 NIV) Hallelujah!
I believe this word from the Lord could very well be for you today, as well as for me. Those adversaries that you are facing now in the natural and spiritual realms are no match for God. The Lord will see that you overcome them, IF you will cooperate with Him by “remembering with confidence” how He has delivered you in the past. Just keep believing, and the same “great and awesome God” who led you to victory before, will do it again and again in the days to come!
Prayer:Lord, help me to keep my eyes off of my adversities, and to fix them squarely on You. Help me to keep my mind off of my problems, and to meditate on Your promises instead. Please continually remind me of all of the ways You have blessed, delivered, and rescued me in the past. Instill in me a rock-solid confidence in You and Your Word. Thank You that as I resist fear, and look confidently to You to fight my battles for me, I will discover once again what a great and awesome God You truly are!
