12. Over the Rainbow

S.K.R.I.P.T.
by Benjiman

Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high
Thereʼs a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow...
Somewhere over the rainbow, I've looked and I waited in vain
To solve my own iniquity and cover the pain
Way up high...
Way up high in the sky at the instance you see
That promise He is keeping for my all eternity
Thereʼs a land that I heard of once in a lullaby
It will be what it will be, nothing changes instantly
Except that moment in your heart you truly know that you are free
Weʼve all walked the road less traveled at times
Put aside our better judgment, and followed blurry lines
Lost our way only to come back again and say
Iʼm better for the moment and Iʼm changed this very day
My faults are not enough to keep you from me
If my hope is in your love, then my cup is never empty
This world donʼt deserve you were daughters and sons
Your place is in the heavenlies with saints and cheribums
We take life as it comes, though the picture is blurred
It makes those moments ever precious, and we cherish every word
Understanding escapes, but then after awhile
The pieces fit together like a story board tile
When we remember your love, when we remember your face
We get joy in definition, a reminder of Grace
It would take too much time to describe your effect
But eternityʼs given us that unique prospect
Just rest in the thought of together again
No more hurt and suffering, I can only imagine
But this is here and now, and itʼs hard to conceive
Hard to be positive, so hard to believe
When itʼs all over and said, Heʼs still on the throne
God couldnʼt do without you so He had to take you home

Harold Arlen, E.Y. Harburg / Rap commentary by Benjiman

Behind the Song:
"To me, the song "Over the Rainbow" is all about hope. In the process of writing and recording this record, during a 2 month period, I lost 5 women close to me, with 3 to cancer. In the midst of it all, the inevitable question seemed to be "Why?" These 5 women epitomized grace, love, and hope in the thick of despair, and their faith was a testament to trusting in God. As we were putting together all the demos for S.K.R.I.P.T., Brandon Bee looked over at me and said, "I know this sounds stupid, but I've always wanted to do a hip-hop version of ʻOver the Rainbowʼ". I instantly knew that we had to do it, and I would dedicate it to the memory of those 5 women that went to be with the Father. Before we pitched for the demo, I had already written the second verse, the verse that would be my ode to those brave amazing women. So to Tashia Seiber, Linda Hart, Suzanne Smith, Kelly Mitchell, and my Grandma Jean Hulburt, I dedicate this song to you… especially the rap of the second verse "God couldn't do without you so he had to take you home"" - Benjiman
