In the darkening days of November, as winter looms on the cloudy horizon, hope may seem as distant as the spring. Reminders to hold on through tough times may seem trite, but they are often necessary. That's why Anita Ranae's new EP, Dwell in Hope, feels opportunely timed. This 5-song EP seeks to refresh the soul by focusing on Jesus and the relief He brings. It is a contemplative folk reminder to hold on to hope through the dark days.
The first thing that is immediately noticeable is Ranae's voice. She sounds very reminiscent of JJ Heller. The soft, folksy sound only makes the comparison stronger. Acoustic guitars drive the music, with strings, drums, and piano filling things out as needed. The production feels restrained and stripped down, but this works with Ranae's voice and the contents of the songs. The music has an encouraging tone, complementing the lyrics just enough without ever stealing the spotlight.
The lyrics are the main strength of this little EP. The title track opens the set with a Psalm-like approach of talking to one's own soul, ultimately challenging it to "choose to dwell in hope." "Be Our Refuge" also borrows from the Psalms, noting the chaos of the world, but calling on God to shelter us through it all. "God of All Comfort" moves into the New Testament with its encouraging message, taking inspiration from Paul's words to the Corinthians. "You Are Who You Are" firmly fixes the listener's gaze on Jesus. It also has the most clever construction to it. Beginning with a general opinion about Jesus, it moves in the second verse to ask who Jesus said He was before the third verse considers how every eye will see Jesus at the end of history. The EP then closes with the song of surrender, "Have Your Way in Me."
Anita Ranae's Dwell in Hope EP may not have much to make it stand out from its peers, but it does carry a charming simplicity to it. In just five tracks, this EP manages to take the listener on a journey from despair to holy surrender, correctly orienting the listener on Christ. It would be easy for this EP to get lost in the shuffle, but those who need a gleam of light in a dreary season can find some with Anita Ranae.
