10. Child of Eden

Genesis
by Joy Williams

Eden was perfection
A beautiful dream
There was no pretending
Everything was as it seemed
But she took the lust for life
Delivered it to man
Caving into the lies
All the hiding began
That’s part, part of who I am
I’m a child of Eden
I’m a child of Eden, I have been
But I won’t look back
It’s just my past
The story doesn’t end
For this child of Eden
I’ve had Eve’s eyes
Of jealousy and shame
And Adam’s disposition
To worry and to blame
But I’ve had days when
I found more in me
Forgiveness and mercy
And I was truly free
I know, I know that’s who I am
Don’t let me forget where I was without You
Don’t let me forget the pain that You went through
Don’t let me forget that I became Yours
When You spread out Your arms for me

words and music by Joy Williams, Jason Ingram, and Jason Houser / © 2005 New Spring, a division of Zomba Enterprises, Inc. (ASCAP) / Dayspring Music LLC (BMI) / Songs of Extreme (ASCAP) / Cedar Sides (ASCAP) (adm. by Cedar Music Publishing).

Behind the Song:
'This is an artsy song that came out of a session I had with one of the pastors we’d been seeing for premarital counseling. He said, “Boy, you just hide things away – you squelch your dreams, you justify… you hide.” I asked him where this comes from and he said, “I just think you are of Eden.” Besides the rust of life that led to the fall of man, the second most destructive sin that took place was that they hid from God. It’s woven into us that we do this daily. You are a child of Eden. We literally wrote that song in about half an hour. That’s who I was, but this song is about realizing that your past does not have to determine your future.' - Joy Williams
