Who knows why some fantastic bands take off and others fizzle, but many times it can be chalked up to what makes a good joke: timing. Steve Taylor and company had all the earmarks of the next big thing, only to be puzzlingly and criminally unknown outside of the devoted few. Of course, having the benefit of hindsight, I have a theory on why. I think they were just a year or two ahead of their time.

Rock' n roll fans will recognize 1991 as a pivotal year, especially the last quarter of the year from September on, containing the release of four iconic alt-rock albums. If mainstream music was still in the throes of hair metal and pop stars, Christian music was even more entrenched. But Chagall was aiming further than the CCM bubble, only to be quickly overshadowed by the volcanic eruption of Seattle grunge: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden.

Still, Chagall Guevara -- fronted by Steve Taylor, and featuring Dave Perkins and Lynn Nichols on guitars, Wade Jaynes on bass, and Mike Mead on drums -- unleashed their self-titled debut in 1991. They set out, not just to make a record, but to lob a Molotov cocktail into the divide between Christian and secular music. Released on MCA Records, and later reissued by Sparrow, Chagall Guevara is a 50-minute blaze of alt-rock swagger, post-punk edge, and razor-sharp lyricism that channels The Clash's grit, R.E.M.'s jangle, and Talking Heads' quirky brilliance. Its only flaw? Being so far ahead of its time meant that neither the CCM nor mainstream markets knew what to do with it. This delightful and stubbornly subversive album remains a cult classic that burns as brightly today as it did over three decades ago.

The sound is a thrilling collision of styles, with Perkins and Nichols weaving jangly hooks and raw distortion over Jaynes and Mead's propulsive rhythm section.
