Rebecca St. James
GOD - the single

Artist Info: Discography
Album length: 5 tracks
Street Date: April 1, 1996

READER RATING:

Leading up to the release of Rebecca St. James' critically acclaimed 1996 album, God, ForeFront Records put out books, merchandise and this single. Over the last couple years, it has become very rare, occasionally popping up on Amazon or eBay. (And I am one of the very lucky people to have a physical copy of this wonderful single.)

GOD - the single (or God - EP, as it's known digitally) starts out with the lead single and title track of the album, "God." A rock-based track with long verses and an edgy chorus, "God" talks about the amazing love God has for us and how astounding it is that God actually sent his Son to die for us and why we should praise Him for that. The remix of "God" tones down the song with a very acoustic styling. Light drums and guitar carry a slower beat than the original.

The fun worship song, "Sweet Song of Salvation," has a black gospel sound to it, complete with a full choir - a sound very different than the usual for RSJ. The almost 7-minute "Side By Side Remix" is a much different take on the song. While the original had a tacky, clichéd sound to it, the remix flaunts a fun techno beat with scattered vocals.

The album closer is the strangest attribute to the album. "He Is Exalted" is completely sung by Celtic artist Michelle Ray, while Rebecca speaks for a about 30 seconds in the beginning. It's arguably a boring and bizarre song to include. Overall, though, GOD - the single gave the listener a peek into the amazing music coming from Rebecca on her sophomore album.
