Jason Upton may seem like a new name, but he just so happens to be anything but that. His sixth independent record Great River Road, is being released to mainstream retail through Gotee Records. It contains 6 re-recorded tracks from his previous releases, as well as 3 brand new tracks.
Upton plays an atmospheric brand of folk worship. It is unique to say the least, but may not necessarily be everyone's cup of tea. His voice takes a bit getting used to as well, though it provides for an enjoyable experience once broken in.
Acoustic guitars, pianos, violins, as well as a plethora of other instruments, are accompanied by lyrics of worship that somewhat resemble the structure of Indian folk tales. For example, "When It Thunders" deals with God's protection through all circumstances, "'Daddy look up there's our star,' I hear you say to me/ Now something deep inside/ Say's "I never want to leave"/ So I need for you to know whenever I go/ God is in control and you are in His arms." The lyrics perfectly compliment the eclectic folk sound of Great River Road.
Jason Upton's sixth release should turn heads in the worship industry. It is one of the more unique worship releases to come along in a good while. Not all will be instantly drawn to his style, but Upton's talent and passion are admirable on just about every level.
