Canton Jones
Lust Drugs and Gospel

Genre(s): R&B / Gospel
Album length: 18 tracks: 55 minutes, 29 seconds
Street Date: February 18, 2014

Hailing from Florida and now serving in Georgia, Canton Jones is a gospel flavored R&B artist who has a slew of albums under his belt and even a few GRAMMY nominations. He is noted as being a multi-talented singer, songwriter, producer, and entrepreneur, and his latest release, Lust Drugs and Gospel, is an album that should be a decent standout in the gospel genre this year.

The opening set of songs showcase superb production, which is something that will shine throughout the entire album; the beats heard here are mostly stellar. At times during these songs, though, the words can get overly repetitive and not flow tightly, which leaves something to be desired even though you can't help but nod your head. CaJo takes his ministry very seriously while only speaking of Gospel-influenced themes in most tracks. You'll notice that heavily in "Kingdom Figures" where the words smoothly fit while singing about standing up and being strong until the King returns, and "Paid It All" refers to the debt that Christ's wonderful blood paid for us all. His heart can be felt on songs "Prodigal Daughter" and "Murderer," with the message of God's overpowering love for us no matter how ugly our past may seem to us. These four tracks stand out on an album that certainly doesn't have any glaring flaws, but also doesn't tend to bring anything overly exciting to the table.

A few tracks fall below mediocre, however. "Loyal" and "Tell Momma" feel like filler and could have easily been left off the final track listing, which includes a total of 18 tracks. The whole album is positively focused, including these two songs, but they do not flow at all and leave a kind of messy overall product. The four skit tracks grew tiresome pretty quickly too, but all in all, it's a decent album for those who already enjoy the gospel R&B sound. If you're looking for some solid hip hop however, you'll probably want to skip over this release.
